The 2026 Ohio Beef Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), was held March 19 - 22 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. The event included breed shows, sales, displays, and parades that featured cattle from seven breeds. The two breeds that hosted shows were Mini Hereford and Murray Grey.

Three Important Partners Awarded the 2026 Friend of the Expo Award

The 2026 Ohio Beef Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), was held March 19 - 22 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. At this year’s event, Ferguson Cattle Company - John Ferguson, Sullivan Supply and Weaver Livestock were awarded the Friend of the Expo Awards for their dedication and contributions to the Ohio Beef Expo’s success.

The Ohio Beef Expo is Ohio’s largest beef cattle event managed by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), a non-profit membership organization, representing the business interests important to farm families raising cattle. All three of these award recipients have been a consistent part of the Expo and made many positive contributions to the event. Learn more about each of the recipients below.

Ferguson Cattle Company - John Ferguson

Ferguson Cattle Company maintains approximately 400 head of Simmental and Angus cattle at their farm in Jefferson, Ohio. Much of the operation’s marketing centers on its annual Rare Vintage Production Sale, where the goal is to market around 50 head of bred heifers along with a select group of open heifers. The operation takes pride in producing sound, functional cattle and providing proven genetics that help advance the beef industry.

The operation’s involvement with the Ohio Beef Expo dates back to the early 2000s, when Ferguson’s daughters, Lindsey and Christen, showed cattle in the Junior Show. In 2002, Ferguson Cattle Company began consigning seedstock cattle to the Expo sales, initially with Maine-Anjou genetics. A milestone was achieved in 2005 when the operation sold the high-selling Maine-Anjou bull. Over time, the program transitioned to Simmental and Angus genetics and became one of the first breeders to sell a Percentage Simmental bull at the Expo. Since then, Ferguson Cattle Company has consistently participated on a large scale in the Ohio Beef Expo breed sales.

Sullivan Supply

Sullivan Supply is a family-owned livestock supply company founded by John Sullivan and his family in his garage in Dunlap, Iowa. Since its inception, the company has expanded to include five additional locations, including the Ohio branch in Hillsboro. Sullivan Supply is widely recognized by its white trucks and red trailers traveling to livestock shows across the state, providing exhibitors with quality equipment and show supplies. In addition to on-site service, Sullivan Supply offers products by phone, online, and through an extensive dealer network. The company also provides complimentary educational programming, including The Pulse, an online source of livestock news and results, along with a scholarship program supporting youth in the beef industry nationwide.

At the Ohio Beef Expo, Sullivan Supply has a strong presence in the trade show, offering an extended line of livestock equipment and supplies for all species, not only cattle. Prior to March 2018, the Ohio location operated as Ohio Valley Show Supply before transitioning to the Sullivan Supply brand. In addition to its trade show presence, Sullivan Supply has supported the Expo through exhibitor giveaways and as a key partner in the junior show.

Weaver Livestock

The roots of Weaver Livestock trace back more than five decades. In 1973, Harry Weaver began a small operation in Mount Hope, Ohio, working out of his garage under the name Fryburg Shoe Shop. The product that ultimately propelled the company into the livestock industry spotlight was the round dairy beef show halter—an innovation that helped establish Weaver Leather as a trusted and recognizable name. In 2010, the company expanded into seven distinct divisions, officially launching Weaver Livestock. Today, Weaver Livestock specializes in equipment and supplies for the four major livestock species—swine, sheep, goats, and cattle—with products manufactured at the company’s original Mount Hope location.

For more than 16 years, Weaver Livestock has made junior exhibitors and their families a top priority at the Ohio Beef Expo. From the moment exhibitors check in, Weaver’s presence is felt. Each junior exhibitor receives a complimentary gift—such as a comb, adhesive, or sheen—designed to support them in the show ring. Weaver also provides complimentary services to exhibitors, such as soap stations at every wash rack, allowing exhibitors to fill their foamers at no cost.

2026 Ohio Beef Expo hosts eight successful seedstock sales

The 2026 Ohio Beef Expo was held March 19 - 22 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), is the premier event for Ohio’s cattle industry including seedstock shows and sales, a trade show, a competitive junior show, and much more all in one place.

2026 Ohio Beef Expo Junior Show champions

For the second year a Buckeye Breeder Series-only show was held with the selection of a Top 5 BBS steers and heifers with separate premiums and banners.

The Junior Show recorded over 860 entries. Showmanship was held Friday, followed by the market animal show on Saturday and the heifer show on Sunday. Junior Showmanship was judged by Carly Wesner- Riley of Cisco, IL and Maria Crandell of Paris, IL. Market animals were evaluated by Brent Cromell, Abbott, TX. The heifer show was judged by Brady Jensen, Courtland, KS. The market animal and heifer show judges swapped to judge the BBS ring as well.

Beef enthusiasts gathered in Columbus for the 38th Ohio Beef Expo

The 38th Ohio Beef Expo was held March 19-22 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), is the premier event for Ohio’s beef industry covering many facets of the beef world with seedstock shows and sales, a trade show, a competitive junior show and much more all in one place.

“There aren’t many states with a Beef Expo quite like ours here in Ohio,” said Shane Riley, Expo chairman. “We have a junior show program that is envied across the country and our breed sales and trade show are something we are proud of. Once someone attends the Ohio Beef Expo, they make plans to come back each year after and we just keep growing.”

The Expo kicked off Thursday with the Judging contest. It was co-hosted with the Ohio State University’s (OSU) collegiate and ATI junior collegiate Livestock Judging Teams and included over 550 youth participants from Ohio and surrounding states judging six classes of cattle, answering questions and evaluating breed data sheets.

The full trade show opened at 12 noon on Thursday featuring many exhibitors selling everything from cattle chutes to farm insurance. Following the opening of the trade show was The Social event where producers and industry affiliates gathered to network and participate in OCA’s Political Action Committee (PAC) auction where over $10,000 was raised. Music was provided by acoustic duo Dalton and Delaney.

Most of the breeds hosted shows or parades on Friday to display cattle being sold in the sales. The Genetic Pathway, located in the Hubbard Feeds Breeds Barn, showcased the industry’s most popular sires and donor prospects on display throughout the weekend.

Friday was also host to the annual online Feeder Cattle Sale hosted by LiveAg and sponsored by United Producers, Inc. that offered consignments of uniform packages of feeder cattle sold off the farm. This year’s sale included 23,000 head of steers, heifers and beef on dairy cattle.

The seven breed sales flourished this year with a combined total of 284 live lots sold at an average of $6,121 and a total gross sales of $1,738,250.

First Defense to Offer Educational Seminar at 2026 Ohio Beef Expo

Ohio Beef Expo Social Open to All Participants with Special Giveaway for Two Lucky OCA Members

The 2026 Ohio Beef Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), will take place March 19–22 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio.

OCA invites all Ohio Beef Expo exhibitors to join an evening of networking with fellow cattlemen and industry leaders at The Social, on Thursday, March 19, at 5:30 p.m. in the food court area of the Trade Show at the Ohio Expo Center. The Social is open to all OCA members, Expo cattle and trade show exhibitors, and volunteers. The event is free to attend and will include light appetizers and drinks, including selections from Ohio Wines.

The Social will feature a live auction with proceeds benefiting OCA’s Political Action Committee (PAC), which supports ag-friendly candidates in upcoming elections. Auction items include cattle prints by C.J. Brown, clippers, Ohio State University football tickets, and other collectibles.

Attendees will also enjoy live music by Dalton & Delaney, an acoustic duo from Ohio. Dalton and Delaney met in 2022 through the National FFA Talent Program and discovered a shared passion for music. Both musicians have strong ties to the agriculture industry, having grown up actively involved in 4-H and FFA.

National Roper Supply (NRS) has generously donated a premium pair of boots for both men and women. A special drawing will be held during The Social to select two lucky OCA members in attendance to receive the boots.

Seven Seedstock Sales and Multiple Breeds on Display at the 2026 Ohio Beef Expo

The 2026 Ohio Beef Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), will take place March 19–22 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio.

The Ohio Beef Expo will host seven seedstock sales throughout Friday, March 20, and Saturday, March 21. Each sale will feature registered females, bulls, and elite genetics, with consignors from across the United States.

Buyers will have multiple opportunities to view cattle prior to sale. Some breeds will host shows where cattle compete before entering the sale ring, while others will conduct breed parades. Both formats allow buyers to evaluate cattle ahead of sale time. In addition, online bidding for all Ohio Beef Expo sales will be available through CCI.live.

All breed shows and parades will take place in Cooper Arena, and all sales will be held in the Voinovich Building.

Ohio Beef Expo Construction Updates: What Attendees Need to Know

Ongoing construction at the Ohio Expo Center will present some logistical challenges for this year’s Ohio Beef Expo. The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) staff and volunteers are working diligently to accommodate all exhibitors and attendees. Multiple meetings with Ohio Expo Center officials have allowed OCA to identify solutions to help maintain traffic flow and maximize the use of available space.

Early Arrival Option

To help manage congestion and improve move-in efficiency, OCA is allowing early arrival for 2026 only. All trade show exhibitors, breed sale consignors, and junior show participants may begin moving cattle and/or tack into the fairgrounds starting at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17. This early arrival option is designed to spread out traffic and ease peak unloading times.

Cattle Exhibitor Trailers Entrance Instructions

Upon arrival, all trailers will be directed as follows:

Primary Entrance: Hudson Street, Exit 112 north of the grounds, turn onto Silver Drive to enter Gate 19 near the railroad.
Alternate Entrance: Plaza on the east side of 17th Avenue off I-71.
No entrance will be allowed from 11th Avenue.
After unloading, all exhibitor trailers must exit through Gate 9 on 11th Avenue, then proceed west on 11th Avenue, turn right on 4th Street, right on Hudson Street, and reenter to park in designated trailer areas.

Please note: 17th Avenue remains closed to traffic from the west side during construction.

To assist with unloading, Expo staff will operate an enhanced staging area along Korbel Avenue for sale and junior show trailers, trade show exhibitors, and cars before entering the fairgrounds at Gate 10 on 17th Avenue.

Parking & Shuttle Service

Parking may still be challenging. OCA will provide golf cart shuttle service from several parking areas north of 17th Avenue to transport attendees to and from the Expo grounds throughout the event.

Parking Instructions for Cars & Pickups (Not cattle trailers)

Enter via Hudson Street Exit 112 to (Gate 17) east of the historic Crew stadium or via the plaza on the east side of 17th Avenue off I-71.
No entrance will be allowed from 11th Avenue.
School buses arriving Thursday, March 19 for the Judging Contest will park in the reserved “sale buyer” parking area north of 17th Avenue.

Sale Buyer Trailer Instructions

Enter from Hudson Street Exit 112 to Silver Drive (Gate 19) or via the plaza on the east side of 17th Avenue off I-71.
Reserved “sale buyer” trailer parking is available in the Korbel camping areas north of 17th Avenue.
Golf cart shuttles will transport sale buyers from trailer parking to the sale cattle barn.
No entrance from 11th Avenue.
Sale trailers will exit via Gate 9 on 11th Avenue.

Mark Your Calendars for the 2026 Ohio Beef Expo, March 19–22

Ohio’s premier beef industry event, the Ohio Beef Expo, will be held March 19–22, 2026, at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus. The Expo brings together cattle enthusiasts from across Ohio and surrounding states for a unique experience that combines education, breed sales, youth shows, industry retail opportunities and more — all in one location.

This year’s schedule will closely resemble the 2025 event. The Coliseum will host all junior show activities, with the Junior Show continuing to feature the Market Animal Show on Saturday and the Heifer Show on Sunday. Two rings will be utilized: one as the main junior show ring and the second for the Buckeye Breeder Series (BBS) show.

Seven breeds will host sales throughout the Expo on both Friday and Saturday.

The Expo Trade Show will again feature a wide variety of vendors and retailers, offering attendees the opportunity to purchase everything from semen and show supplies to trailers and insurance. The Trade Show will open Thursday, March 19, at 12 p.m. and continue throughout the weekend in the Voinovich Building.

At 5:30 on Thursday, March 19 all exhibitors and OCA members are invited to attend the Social at the Ohio Beef Expo near the sale ring in the Voinovich building.The Social includes light appetizers, Ohio wines, a PAC auction and live music by acoustic duo Dalton and Delaney. National Roper Supply (NRS) has also generously donated a premium pair of boots for both men and women. A special drawing of OCA members in attendance will be held to determine the winners of the boots.

The Genetic Pathway will provide buyers access to semen from some of the nation’s leading cattle genetics, further enhancing marketing and purchasing opportunities for producers.

Due to ongoing construction at the Ohio Expo Center, some traffic and parking challenges are expected. The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) staff and volunteers are working closely with Expo Center officials to minimize disruptions and ensure a smooth experience for all exhibitors and attendees. HerdPro Co-Owners, Geer and Kern Receive Friend of the Expo Award at 2024 Ohio Beef Expo

The 2025 Ohio Beef Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), was held March 13 - 16 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. At this year’s event, HerdPro co-owners, Shane Geer and Bob Kern were awarded the Friend of the Expo Award for their dedication and contributions to the Ohio Beef Expo’s success.

The Ohio Beef Expo is Ohio’s largest beef cattle event managed by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), a non-profit membership organization, representing the business interests important to farm families raising cattle. Geer and Kern have maintained a positive relationship with OCA and the Ohio Beef Expo since the inception of HerdPro in 2012.

HerdPro began in a small garage in Northern Ashland, Ohio, where they built their first products. Since then, the company has expanded to a larger, more efficient manufacturing plant producing a variety of livestock equipment. HerdPro is committed to providing quality, strength, and professionalism in their products, with a strong focus on both full-time and part-time farmers. The company’s meticulously crafted and customized equipment guarantees functionality and safety in livestock handling and feeding, regardless of livestock size—whether cattle, bison, goats, sheep, or any other species. Shane Greer, co-owner of HerdPro, brings years of manufacturing and farming experience to the company, continuously creating new ideas and designs to better serve the needs of farmers.

Through their support of the Ohio Beef Expo, HerdPro showcases their products in the indoor trade show, displaying various types of livestock equipment such as feeders, gates, chutes, scales, etc. Throughout the entire week of the Expo, HerdPro plays an essential role by donating chutes and scales for both the junior show and eight seedstock sales. Greer, along with other HerdPro employees, attend the Expo throughout the week, fulfilling various roles. These include supporting the HerdPro trade show booth and engaging in Ohio Cattlemen’s Association-hosted events, such as the Social Event, PAC Auction, and Cowboy Happy Hour.

Greer emphasizes the significance of the Ohio Beef Expo to Ohio’s agricultural industry, describing it as the “Super Bowl” of all events that HerdPro attends. He explains that the Expo is a time when everyone—from cow-calf producers consigning in a sale to junior show exhibitors, to trade show attendees of all ages—come together for one cause: to strengthen the agricultural industry and stay connected. Ohio Beef Expo hosts successful judging contest

The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association hosted the 2025 Ohio Beef Expo March 13-16 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. More than 30,000 cattle industry enthusiasts gathered for the event, including breed shows, sales, and many youth activities, including the annual judging contest.

Thursday, March 13 the judging contest was held in conjunction with The Ohio State University Extension. Over 500 4-H and FFA youth gathered in Taft Coliseum to participate in the contest. All participants evaluated six live cattle classes and were required to answer questions regarding those classes. Participants were divided into junior and senior divisions. The 2025 Ohio Beef Expo was held March 13-16 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), is the premier event for Ohio’s cattle industry including seedstock shows and sales, a trade show, a competitive junior show, and much more all in one place.

To provide added recognition for the Buckeye Breeder's Series (BBS) program featuring Ohio's bred, born, and raised registered steers and heifers, the Ohio Beef Expo added a new Buckeye Breeder Series-only show with the selection of a Top 5 BBS steers and heifers with separate premiums and banners.

The Junior Show recorded over 950 entries. Showmanship was held Friday, followed by the market animal show on Saturday and the heifer show on Sunday. Junior Showmanship was judged by the sibling duo, Calli Spengler, Cascade IA, and Ty Bayer, Fort Collins, CO. Market animals and BBS heifers were evaluated by Lydell Meier, Clinton, TN. BBS market animals were sorted by Cory Thomsen, Madison, SD. The heifer show judge was John McCurry, Hutchinson, KS.

2025 Ohio Beef Expo hosts eight successful seedstock sales

The 2025 Ohio Beef Expo held March 13-16 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio hosted eight successful breed sales. The Ohio Beef Expo is Ohio’s largest beef cattle event managed by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), a non-profit membership organization, representing the business interests important to farm families raising cattle.

The eight breed sales flourished this year with a combined total of 305.5 live lots sold at an average of $5,322 and a total gross sales of $1,747,843. Individual and total breed sales results are shown in the table below.

2025 Ohio Beef Expo Trade Show Hosts over 200 Agricultural Vendors

The 2025 Ohio Beef Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), will take place March 13 - 16 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio.

The Ohio Beef Expo hosts the largest trade show of its kind in the Midwest. The show features indoor and outdoor trade shows. Over 200 agricultural vendors will exhibit and sell farm machinery, cattle equipment, feed, and many other goods and services.

The trade show is open each day of the Expo: Thursday, March 13 - 3 - 6 p.m.; Friday, March 14 - 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.; Saturday, March 15 - 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.; Sunday, March 16 - 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Admission to the trade show is free but there is a $7 parking charge at the gate.

8 Seedstock Sales to be hosted at the 2025 Ohio Beef Expo

The 2025 Ohio Beef Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), will take place March 13 - 16 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio.

The Ohio Beef Expo will host eight seedstock sales throughout the course of Friday, March 14 and Saturday, March 15. Each sale will feature registered females, bulls, and genetics with sale consignors from across the United States.

There are several options for buyers to view the cattle before they enter the sale ring. Some breeds have shows where the cattle compete before being sold, others parade their cattle, both of which allow the buyers to view the cattle before sale day. Online bidding for all Ohio Beef Expo sales is through CCI.live.

Ohio Beef Expo Educational Opportunities

The 2025 Ohio Beef Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), will take place March 13 - 16 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio.

The Ohio Beef Expo offers several educational opportunities for visitors to learn more about all facets of the agriculture and beef industries.

Some specific educational opportunities offered this year are the Cattlemen’s Learning Center Seminars. Each seminar is 45 minutes long and will take place in the sale ring on the trade show floor in the Voinovich Building. The topics of the seminars vary but have a focus on commercial cattlemen and the beef industry.

Ohio Beef Expo Social Open to all Expo Participants

The 2025 Ohio Beef Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), will take place March 13 - 16 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio.

OCA invites you to join in an evening of networking with fellow cattlemen and industry leaders at the pre-Expo event, The Social, on Thursday, March 13, 7:30 p.m. at the Hilton Columbus/Polaris. The Social is open to OCA membership, Expo cattle and trade show exhibitors and volunteers. It’s free to attend and will include appetizers and drinks.

The Social will host a live auction with proceeds benefiting OCA’s Political Action Committee (PAC) fund to support ag-friendly candidates in the next election. Auction items will include cattle prints from C.J. Brown, clippers, OSU football tickets and other collectables.

In addition, the Social will feature live music by Dalton & Delaney. An acoustic duo from Ohio, Dalton & Delaney met in 2022 in the National FFA Talent Program. They realized they both shared a love for music and decided to start their own duo. Dalton and Delaney are no strangers to the agriculture industry as they both grew up heavily involved in 4-H and FFA.

Delaney lives on a farm in Fairfield County where she and her family raise beef cattle and are members of OCA. She has participated in the OCA BEST Program for many years where she has enjoyed showing cattle, competing in the stockmanship program, and promoting the beef industry. Delaney recently completed a year of service as the 2023-2024 Ohio FFA State Vice President. She is currently attending The Ohio State University majoring in agricultural communications.

Dalton resides in Darke County where he is currently a loan originator working with farmers on agricultural lines of credit and farm loans. He recently obtained his associate degree in banking and is looking forward to earning his bachelor’s degree in business administration. Dalton has performed in several bands and enjoys writing his own music.

New Buckeye Breeders Series (BBS) ONLY Show to take place at the 2025 Ohio Beef Expo

The 2025 Ohio Beef Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), will take place March 13 - 16 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio.

The Ohio Beef Expo is Ohio’s largest beef cattle event managed by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), a non-profit membership organization, representing the business interests important to farm families raising cattle. It is one of the largest events held at the Ohio Expo Center with an annual attendance of over 30,000 people with over 1,500 head of cattle exhibited.

New this year, to provide added recognition to Ohio's bred, born and raised registered steers and heifers in the Buckeye Breeder's Series (BBS) program, the junior show committee has implemented a separate BBS ONLY show at the Expo. The show will include the selection of the Top 5 BBS Heifers and Steers with separate premiums and banners.

Similar to other OCA BEST shows, the show ring will have two rings. Cattle will show in the main junior show ring and then all BBS cattle will filter over into the second BBS ring to show. The top 5 BBS will be selected after the conclusion of the top 10 in the junior show ring.

To include as many BBS animals as possible, the OBE Jr. Show Committee is clarifying the following:

$25 nominations for new BBS animals, not already nominated in the BEST program, will be accepted through the close of OBE entries, rather than the published March 1 deadline.
New BBS animals will not be required to pay an additional BEST nomination fee, since it is the last sanctioned show of the season
Points for the BBS BEST division will only be counted for BBS animals in the main ring. (There will be no points available in the BBS only rings.)

BBS Steers and heifers can show in both rings and show in different divisions in different rings, (i.e. show crossbred in the main ring and show by breed in the BBS ring), if desired, providing they meet the following:

Pay a $25 BBS nomination for new BBS cattle with registration papers confirming BBS eligibility by the close of OBE entries.

It is one of the largest events held at the Ohio Expo Center with an annual attendance of over 30,000 people with over 1,500 head of cattle exhibited.

The Ohio Beef Expo hosts the largest trade show of its kind in the Midwest, a junior market animal and heifer show with over 1,000 head of cattle exhibiting and over 600 youth competing in showmanship and judging contests.

Ohio Beef Expo exhibitors and attendees come from across the Midwest. The show features indoor and outdoor trade shows, cattle shows and sales with cattle buyers from over 20 states, junior shows, and educational events.

A few changes have been made to contribute to the success of the 2025 Ohio Beef Expo.

First, to add additional value to Ohio's bred, born and raised registered steers and heifers through the Buckeye Breeder's Series (BBS) program the Ohio Beef Expo will feature a Buckeye Breeder Series-only show with a selection of the Top 5 BBS steers and heifers with separate premiums and banners.

Next, the youth judging contest has been moved to Thursday, March 13 rather than being held on Friday. This will enhance the contest and allow the contest to have its own separate awards ceremony where the Top 10 Individuals and Top 5 Teams will be recognized.

Lastly,Tuberculosis (TB) requirements for sale cattle have changed for 2025. No TB test is required if cattle originate from a TB free state. Cattle coming from the four counties of Michigan (Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency, and Oscoda) will need a TB test. Contact the Ohio Department of Agriculture at 614- 728-6220 for additional direction.

Ohio Beef Expo hosts nine successful seedstock sales

The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association hosted the 2024 Ohio Beef Expo March 14-17 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. Nine breed sales were successfully hosted on Friday and Saturday.

This year’s cattle sales were extremely successful selling 371 live lots sold at an average price of $4,082 with a live gross of $1,514,340.

The high-selling bull was Lot 37 - GOET Worth the Drive 46L in the Maine - Anjou sale. He sold to Sleepy Hollow Farm, Clarington, OH for $20,000 and was consigned by Goettemoeller Show Cattle, Winchester, IN.

The high-selling female was also from the Maine - Anjou sale. Lot 64 - MCCF Lucille 40L sold to KOB Cattle, Hereford, TX for $31,000. She was consigned by Muir Cattle Co, Waynesfield, OH.

Ohio Beef Expo hosts successful judging contest

The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association hosted the 2024 Ohio Beef Expo March 14-17 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. More than 30,000 cattle industry enthusiasts gathered for the event which included breed shows, sales, and many youth activities including the annual judging contest.

Friday, March 15 the judging contest was held in conjunction with The Ohio State University Extension. Over 580 4-H and FFA youth gathered in Taft Coliseum to participate in the contest. All participants evaluated six live cattle classes and were required to answer questions regarding those classes. Participants were divided into junior and senior divisions. Tom honored with Friend of the Expo Award at 2024 Ohio Beef Expo

The 2024 Ohio Beef Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), was held March 14 - 17 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. At this year’s event, Bill Tom of Washington Court House, Ohio was posthumously awarded the Friend of the Expo Award for his dedication and contributions to the Ohio Beef Expo’s success.

The Ohio Beef Expo is the premier event for Ohio’s beef industry covering many facets of the beef world with seedstock shows and sales, a trade show, a competitive junior show and much more all in one place. At the time of his passing in December 2023, Tom was the OCA vice president and served on the board of directors. He was also vice chair of the Ohio Beef Expo. Prior to this he served in many Expo leadership roles, including chairing the Expo Junior Show.

Tom provided tremendous leadership for the Ohio Beef Expo including planning the event, helping juniors in the show ring, manning a trade show booth, or serving as a ringman at an Expo sale. He never shied away from sharing his passion for the Beef Expo and the entire beef industry. Tom served as a mentor, leader, and friend, not only at the Expo but throughout many different events and programs.

Tom had a successful career in agriculture that included many management positions, the most recent being Executive Vice President of livestock marketing for United Producers, Inc. (UPI). He and his fellow staff members at (UPI), were instrumental in establishing an online feeder cattle sale at the Ohio Beef Expo. The online feeder cattle sale offers consignments of uniform feeder cattle packages with an average of 1,800 head marketed each year. This sale encourages commercial cattle producers to attend the Expo and support the sale and the trade show. UPI and Tom’s commitment to the online feeder cattle sale has been positive for the Ohio Beef Expo and allowed for continued growth of the sale.

Tom had a passion for helping the next generation of young cattlemen and women succeed, therefore the Ohio Cattlemen’s Foundation has created a scholarship fund in his name to support the youth involved in Ohio’s beef industry. The 36th Annual Ohio Beef Expo was held March 14-17 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), is the premier event for Ohio’s beef industry covering many facets of the beef world with seedstock shows and sales, a trade show, a competitive junior show and much more all in one place.

The Junior Show set a record this year with over 1,000 entries. Showmanship was held Friday followed by the Market Animal show on Saturday and the Heifer show on Sunday. Junior Showmanship was judged by Josh and Marissa Streitmatter of Indiana, Market Animals were evaluated by Jirl Buck, Oklahoma, and the Heifer show judge was Andrew Foster, Michigan.

The 34th Ohio Beef Expo Junior Show was recently held at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. This year’s show included separate championship drives for the Buckeye Breeders Series (BBS) - a division of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association’s (OCA) Beef Exhibitor Show Total (BEST) program that features registered cattle born, bred and raised in Ohio.

Two recipients awarded with Saltwell Scholarships at the Ohio Beef Expo

The 34th Ohio Beef Expo was held March 17-20 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), is the premier event for Ohio’s beef industry. Two recipients were awarded with scholarships courtesy of Saltwell Western Store at this year’s event.

Saltwell Western Store is the official provider of Ohio Beef Expo apparel in the Trade Show each year. Jay and Sally Puzacke, owners, donate a percentage of sales generated from the official line of clothing sold to be used for scholarships granted through the Ohio Cattlemen’s Foundation.

This year, two $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Luke McKee, Gambier, Ohio, and Shala Graham, Frazeysburg, Ohio for their involvement in the beef industry and their academic achievements.

2022 Ohio Beef Expo Junior Show champions

The 34th Ohio Beef Expo was held March 17-20 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), is the premier event for Ohio’s beef industry covering many facets of the beef world with seedstock shows and sales, a trade show, a competitive junior show and much more all in one place.

For the first time in the history of the Expo, the Junior Show activities were held in the coliseum.

The Junior Show set a record this year with over 950 entries. Showmanship was held Friday followed by the Market Animal show on Saturday and the Heifer show on Sunday. Junior Showmanship was judged by Garrett and Gretchen Lampe, IL, Market Animals were evaluated by Tim Fitzgerald, IN, and the Heifer show judge was Glen Martin, TX. Haley receives Friend of the Expo Award at 34th Ohio Beef Expo

The 34th Ohio Beef Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), was held March 17-20 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. At this year’s event, Pam Haley of West Salem, Ohio was honored with the Friend of the Expo Award for her dedication and contributions to the Expo’s annual success. The Ohio Beef Expo is the premier event for Ohio’s beef industry covering many facets of the beef world with seedstock shows and sales, a trade show, a competitive junior show and much more all in one place.

Haley has been devoted to the success of the Ohio Beef Expo throughout the past decade. Her commitment of countless hours of planning, organizing and executing this event has been a key element in ensuring the vitality of the Expo for several years and continues to be present today. Haley’s dedication has been demonstrated as she has served as the Simmental breed representative, breeds chairman and Expo co-chairman. She has also served on the OCA board of directors since 2013.

Haley alongside her husband, Mike, and their two children operate Haley Farms in Wayne County. She has been around the beef industry her whole life, and her passion for the beef industry grew into her own operation where she currently manages a herd of 80 head of registered Simmental cattle.

Draganic receives Friend of the Expo Award at 34th Ohio Beef Expo

The 34th Ohio Beef Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), was held March 17-20 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. At this year’s event, J.L. Draganic of Wakeman, Ohio was honored with the Friend of the Expo Award for his dedication and contributions to the Expo’s annual success. The Ohio Beef Expo is the premier event for Ohio’s beef industry covering many facets of the beef world with seedstock shows and sales, a trade show, a competitive junior show and much more all in one place.

Draganic became involved with the Expo as a volunteer on the junior show committee over 13 years ago. Since then, he served as an Expo co-chair for several years and has been on the OCA board of directors since 2013. While he recently stepped down from his co-chairman position, Draganic continues to support the Expo where needed to ensure its success.

Draganic became involved in the beef industry at a young age, where he raised steers and heifers through the 4-H program. His passion for agriculture bloomed over time as he, and his wife, Jessica are raising their two children on a family farm in Huron County while he also works full-time for a local farm implement company.

Beef enthusiasts gathered in Columbus for the 34th Ohio Beef Expo

The 34th Ohio Beef Expo was held March 17-20 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), is the premier event for Ohio’s beef industry covering many facets of the beef world with seedstock shows and sales, a trade show, a competitive junior show and much more all in one place.

The Expo kicked off Thursday with a full trade show featuring many eager exhibitors selling everything from cattle chutes to farm insurance. Following the opening of the trade show was The Social event where producers and industry affiliates gathered to network and participate in OCA’s Political Action Committee (PAC) auction where over $9,100 was raised.

In addition to the Murray Grey show, five breeds hosted shows or parades on Friday to display cattle being sold in the sales. The Genetic Pathway, located in the Show Coat Solutions Breeds Barn, showcased the industry’s most popular sires and donor prospects on display throughout the weekend.

Friday was also host to the annual Internet Feeder Cattle Sale hosted by United Producers Inc. that offered consignments of uniform packages of feeder cattle sold off the farm. This year’s sale included 24 lots with over 1,800 head of steers, heifers and beef on dairy cattle.

The Judging contest, co-hosted with the Ohio State University’s (OSU) Livestock Judging Team, was back after being postponed for two years with over 460 youth participants from Ohio and surrounding states traveling to judge six classes of cattle, answer questions and evaluate breed data sheets.

The seven breed sales flourished this year with a combined total of 322 live lots sold at an average of $3,702 and a total gross sales of $1,277,242.

Two recipients were honored with the Friend of the Expo Award for their dedication and contributions to the Expo’s success over the years. J.L. Draganic, Wakeman, Ohio, and Pam Haley, West Salem, Ohio, received the 2022 honors for serving the Ohio Beef Expo for over a decade.

2022 Ohio Beef Expo schedule released

Planning is underway for the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association’s (OCA) 34th Ohio Beef Expo, the premier event for Ohio’s beef industry. On March 17-20, 2022, the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus will provide cattle enthusiasts from across the state with a unique experience that brings education, breed sales, youth shows, industry retail opportunities and more together all in one place.

This year’s schedule will be a complete version of the Expo including events like the judging contest and youth quality assurance training.

For the first time in the history of the Expo, the Coliseum will be used for all junior activities. The Junior Show will continue with the Market Animal Show on Saturday and the Heifer Show on Sunday. All Junior Show stalling will take place online, and viaducts are reserved for OCA BEST sponsors. Remaining viaduct bays will be auctioned online in mid-February.

Eight breeds will host sales during the Expo and, like last year, there will only be one sale ring.

The Expo Trade Show will continue to host vendors and retailers of all kinds to provide attendees with the opportunity to purchase everything from semen to trailers and from show supplies to insurance. Thursday, March 17 will be the opening day for the trade show beginning at 3 p.m.

The 33rd Ohio Beef Expo was one of a kind

(MARYSVILLE, Ohio) – The 33rd Ohio Beef Expo was held March 18-21 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. This year’s event, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), was a producer focused event to provide critical farm income for the cattle families and rural small businesses that participate in it. Despite this year’s challenges, the Expo successfully hosted breed shows and sales, a retail trade show and a youth cattle show. OCA followed an approved COVID plan for the Expo that required postponing many other traditional events and seminars.

The Expo kicked off with the retail trade show featuring many eager exhibitors selling everything from cattle chutes to farm insurance. Sullivan Supply was selected as the premier large booth exhibitor, Honey Creek Western Wear was the premier small booth exhibitor and Umbarger Show Feeds was awarded the premier outdoor booth exhibitor. The premier Genetic Pathway exhibitor was Breeder’s World.

Four breeds hosted shows on Friday to display cattle being sold in the sales. The Genetic Pathway, located in the ShowBloom Breed’s Barn, showcased the industry’s most popular sires and donor prospects on display throughout the weekend.

The seven breed sales flourished this year with a reformatted sale schedule and a new sale ring concept to promote social distancing. A total of 250 live lots were sold at an average of $3,524 with a gross of $927,235.

Friday was the annual Internet Feeder Cattle Sale hosted by United Producers Inc. that offered consignments of uniform packages of feeder cattle sold off the farm. This year’s successful sale included 27 lots with 2,733 total head.

Two recipients were honored with the Friend of the Expo Award for their dedication and contributions to the Expo’s annual success. Because the 2020 Ohio Beef Expo was cancelled, the honor was extended to Frank Phelps of Logan County and AMW (Athens, Meigs and Washington counties) Cattlemen’s Association again this year.

The Junior Show portion began Friday with Showmanship followed by the Market Animal show on Saturday and the Heifer show on Sunday. Junior Showmanship was judged by Brad and Amber Seiss, Thurmont, MD. Joe Rathmann, Smithville, TX, assessed this year’s Market Animal show, and Kyle Conley, Sulpher, OK was the judge for the Heifer show. A combined total of nearly 900 head from across the state were evaluated.

During the Expo, volunteers signed up and renewed nearly 150 OCA members. Current or new OCA members also had the opportunity to win prizes, such as a cooler, semen tank and a wood-pellet fired grill. These drawings were sponsored by Ohio Corn and Wheat.

The dates for the 2022 Ohio Beef Expo are March 17-20.

Ohio Cattlemen’s Association moves forward with 2021 Ohio Beef Expo

Planning is underway for the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association’s (OCA) 2021 Ohio Beef Expo scheduled for March 18-21 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus. Maintaining a safe environment while providing Expo participants with the critical necessity to continue essential farm income are the objectives driving all decisions for the event.

Accomplishing these goals has required the Beef Expo to reformat several elements to comply with the current COVID related state health orders. The seven seedstock sales have been changed to reduce the number of buyers in one area and scheduled for one sale at a time utilizing only one sale ring in the Voinovich building.

The sales will start Friday afternoon March 19 and continue through Saturday, March 20. Most sales will also provide potential buyers with an optional online bidding opportunity. In addition, the Online Feeder Cattle Sale will continue at a new time on Friday morning.

The Beef Expo’s trade show is being planned and exhibitor information will be available at the Expo’s website or by contacting OCA staff contact Bailey Eberhart at beberhart@ohiocattle.org.

The Beef Expo’s goal is to provide a retail trade show as close to normal as possible while complying with the state’s health orders. The committee is working with state and local officials to explore all options for its continuation. Currently, the trade show closing time has been extended until 7:00 p.m. for Thursday-Saturday to accommodate the revised breed sale schedule.

Plans continue to host the popular Ohio Beef Expo Genetic Pathway for participants to purchase the industry’s best semen and embryos for the 2021 breeding season.

The Ohio Beef Expo Junior Show is the last BEST sanctioned show of the season and has also been reformatted to reduce congestion and provide distancing. It will continue to be held in Cooper Arena with showmanship beginning midday on Friday, March 19. The market animal show will be held on Saturday, March 20. The heifer show will be held on Sunday, March 21 and still provide the opportunity for juniors to purchase heifers in Saturday’s Expo sales and enter them to show in the junior show the following day. Both the market animal show and the heifer show will include an additional breed division drive for registered cattle who are BEST participants and eligible for the Buckeye Breeders Series program.

The decision has been made to suspend seminars and other large educational events requiring the Beef Expo judging contest, youth quality assurance training and fitting demonstrations to be discontinued for 2021. A smaller Beef Quality Assurance certification will be held for BEST participants only. The Beef Expo judging contest is one of the OCA BEST program’s stockmanship contests. The BEST committee is currently evaluating options to schedule another judging contest in conjunction with a different BEST show weekend to replace Expo’s event or to reduce the number of stockmanship contests for 2021.

The need to maintain annual Ohio Beef Expo sponsorships has never been greater to ensure OCA can continue to host this successful event and sponsors can take advantage of the Expo’s extraordinary recognition opportunities. Ohio Beef Expo Set for March 19-22, 2020

The Ohio Beef Expo, the premier event of Ohio’s beef industry, will take place March 19-22 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. This annual event, coordinated by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), includes a kick-off social; breed sales, shows and displays; beef quality assurance sessions; a multi-day trade show and a highly competitive junior show.

The Ohio Beef Expo will officially kick-off with the opening of the trade show at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 19. This is the second year for the Expo to open on Thursday, allowing more time for attendees, especially those that exhibit cattle at the Expo, to visit with vendors in the Voinovich building. The Expo trade show features over 140 vendors from 25 states that offer products and services beneficial to all cattlemen. OCA members and Expo exhibitors are invited to attend The Social on Thursday evening at the Expo headquarters hotel, the Hilton Columbus/Polaris. The event will auction items for OCA’s PAC fund.

Sponsorships for the 2020 Ohio Beef Expo are available on a first come first serve basis. Sponsors are recognized with signage at the Ohio Beef Expo, in the Ohio Beef Expo Program or on the Ohio Beef Expo website. In order to receive recognition in the Expo Program, sponsorships must be received by February 1, 2020. For the first time in Expo history, the Ohio Beef Expo will utilize Taft Coliseum for the junior show, showmanship and judging contest. With the growth of the Ohio Beef Expo, it has become necessary to secure a new facility that will accommodate more youth and cattle. The coliseum will provide a larger area for youth to exhibit and evaluate cattle and more seats for spectators. Another change for 2020 is the addition of a Miniature Hereford sale which will be held at the Ohio Beef Expo on Saturday, March 21 at 4:30 p.m. in the Voinovich building.

Registration for the judging contest on Friday, March 20 will take place in Taft Coliseum. Contest participants will meet at 7:00 a.m. for registration. The breed shows and parades will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Cooper Arena and O’Neill buildings. At 12:30 p.m., youth are invited to attend the Youth Beef Quality Assurance session. The online feeder cattle sale will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. in the Voinovich building. As the sale takes place, judging contest awards will be presented at 2:30 p.m., and then youth can attend the junior show welcome party at 5:30 p.m.

Saturday, March 21 will host the breed cattle sales in the Voinovich building, starting at 10:00 a.m. with Angus, Hereford, Maine-Anjou, Miniature Hereford, Red Angus, Shorthorn and Simmental cattle selling. Breed sale catalogs will be posted online at www.ohiobeefexpo.com. The junior showmanship competition will begin at noon on Saturday in Taft Coliseum with over 400 participants competing for top honors in their respective divisions. OCA Board of Directors takes Disciplinary Action at Ohio Beef Expo

The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) BEST program and the OCA Board of Directors recently issued final disciplinary action involving one participating family in the 2018-19 OCA BEST program. This action is the result of the Ohio Beef Expo’s testing process for champions conducted by the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA). OCA was notified of these test results by the Analytical Toxicology Laboratory (ATL) of ODA. Additionally, the letter stated that exhibitor had violated Ohio’s Livestock Show Reform Law, Chapter 901 of the Ohio Revised Code under Ohio’s Livestock Tampering Exhibition Rules, as set forth in Sections 901-19-1 through 901-19-21 of the Ohio Administrative Code.

The violation involved the Grand Champion Heifer at the Ohio Beef Expo testing positive for Flunixin in her system. The family was notified of this finding per the testing results provided by ODA. The family attended a meeting to share their side of the incident with OCA BEST and Board of Directors leadership. The heifer in question had become sick nearly two weeks prior to the Expo and was treated at her location of housing by a hired hand per the farm’s animal treatment protocol issued by the farm’s veterinarian.

The treatment method, although issued by a veterinarian, resulted in the animal testing positive for residue in her system at the time of the show, a violation of Ohio Revised Code (ORC) Chapter 901-19 pertaining to Livestock Exhibitions.

Throughout the investigation the names of the BESTexhibitor and breeder were never used to avoid any perception of partiality. The OCA BEST committee reviewed all the information and developed recommended penalties outlined in the OCA BEST rules derived from the ORC. Through a unanimous vote the OCA BEST committee recommended the following disciplinary actions, which were supported and finalized by the OCA Board of Directors.

The disciplinary action prohibits the exhibitor and all animals owned by the exhibitor from exhibiting at any OCA BEST sanctioned show or participating in the Best of the Buckeye program for a period of three years from the date of this violation. This penalty will expire on March 17, 2022.

Additionally, they will forfeit the title of grand champion heifer at the Ohio Beef Expo and all awards including showmanship from the 2018-19 BEST show season.

Photos of the heifer depicting it as Grand Champion Heifer of the Ohio Beef Expo Junior Show will not appear on OCA websites or be printed in OCA publications. In place of the photo and exhibitor name will be the following statement, “Disqualified for violation of Ohio’s Livestock Exhibitions rules.” Furthermore, the exhibitor and all those associated with this heifer are not permitted to place advertising that names the heifer, through either copy or photos, as Grand Champion Heifer of the Ohio Beef Expo Junior Show.

As the sanctioned entity of livestock exhibition events, OCA and its’ youth programs operate under Ohio’s Livestock Tampering & Exhibitions rules set forth in the ORC. All youth and their families are obligated to review and understand the rules that pertain to all livestock exhibition events in the state of Ohio.

Ohio Beef Expo Once Again a Success in 2019

Beef industry enthusiasts gathered in Columbus, Ohio, March 14-17, for the 2019 Ohio Beef Expo. The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) hosted more than 30,000 participants and attendees at the Ohio Expo Center. The Expo provides an annual opportunity for those in the cattle industry in Ohio, and across the nation, to learn and enhance their operations through a multi-day trade show, cattle sales, youth events and quality assurance sessions.

The Expo kicked off with a trade show featuring more than 130 vendors from 16 states. Sullivan Supply was selected as the premier large booth exhibitor, ShowBloom – F.L. Emmert Company was selected as the premier small booth exhibitor and Heritage Show Supply was selected as the premier outdoor exhibitor. The premier Genetic Pathway exhibitor was Tim Schaeffer Show Cattle.

A social was hosted for OCA members, volunteers, trade show participants and cattle exhibitors on Thursday, March 14, at the Hilton Columbus/Polaris. OCA also held a live auction to raise money for OCA’s Political Action Committee (PAC) fund. An adult beef quality assurance session was offered on Friday, with close to 120 participants attending.

Four breed shows and two breed parades were featured Friday and Saturday, as well as numerous breed displays representing the Angus, Charolais, Dexter, Hereford, Maine-Anjou, Miniature Hereford, Murray Grey, Red Angus, Shorthorn and Simmental breeds. The Genetic Pathway, located in the ShowBloom Breed’s Barn, showcased the industry’s most popular sires and donor prospects on display throughout the weekend.

Six breed sales brought in large crowds on Saturday, March 16, selling 345.5 lots with an average price of $3,435 and a gross of $1,186,650.

Two recipients were honored with the Friend of the Expo Award for their dedication and contributions to the Expo’s annual success. C.J. Brown of Lindewood, Illinois, and Joe Foster of Plain City, were both honored. Brown owns C.J. Brown studios, where she creates unique prints for numerous cattle associations and companies. C.J. has always been willing to donate to fundraisers and create original artwork for the Ohio Beef Expo, particularly for the Expo’s 30th anniversary in 2017. Foster is a district sales manager for Quality Liquid Feeds, where he oversees sales in Ohio, southern Indiana, West Virginia and Virginia. Foster has been heavily involved with the Expo since nearly the beginning of the event and is currently the vice-chairman of the Trade Show Committee. Throughout the year he is in communication with trade show exhibitors and also works to accommodate them during the event.

Friday was Youth Day, sponsored by the Gallia County Cattlemen’s Association and the Fayette County Cattle Feeders. The day began with the judging contest, where over 560 youth tested their ability to evaluate cattle. 2019 marked record participation in this event. Nearly 450 youth participated in youth quality assurance training as well. Junior exhibitors also had the opportunity to attend two fitting and clipping demonstrations and a welcome pizza party. Events continued Saturday with over 475 exhibitors in the showmanship competition, sponsored by Cattle Visions, LLC, Engelhaupt Embroidery and ShowBloom – F.L. Emmert Company. Junior Showmanship was judged by Dan and Jill Harker of Hope, Indiana. The junior portion of the Expo wrapped up Sunday with the junior market animal show and junior heifer show. Amanda Schnoor, California, evaluated the breeding heifers while Dr. Ryan Rathmann, Texas, assessed the market animals. A combined total of nearly 815 head from across the state participated in the two shows. During the junior show, Kinley Kreis, Muskingum County, was awarded the $1,000 Saltwell Expo scholarship, funded by the Saltwell Western Store and Ohio Beef Expo.

During the event, OCA volunteers signed up and renewed nearly 200 memberships, including NCBA members. Current or new OCA members also had the opportunity to win some great prizes, like YETI coolers and a wood-pellet fired grill. These drawings were sponsored by the Ohio Corn Marketing Program.

Brown Named 2019 Friend of the Ohio Beef Expo

The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) awarded C.J. Brown of Lindewood, Illinois with the Friend of the Expo Award at the Ohio Beef Expo, held March 14-17 at the Ohio Expo Center.

Each year, volunteers spend countless hours ensuring the success of the Ohio Beef Expo. In order to show OCA’s sincere appreciation for those who have dedicated themselves over the years, the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association and the Ohio Beef Expo planning committee developed the “Friends of the Expo” award. Each year, this award is presented to worthy recipients who have contributed to the success of the Expo for the past 32 years. Since its inception in 2002, 45 individuals or organizations have received this award. In 2019, this award was presented to two very deserving individuals, C.J. Brown and Joe Foster.

Brown has always been willing to donate to fundraisers and create original artwork for the Ohio Beef Expo. For example, she created unique artwork for the Expo’s 30th anniversary in 2017. She has been a tremendous supporter of the Expo over the years and sells numerous pieces of artwork in her booth at the Expo’s trade show each year. Throughout Brown’s years at the Ohio Beef Expo, her business has expanded, allowing her to purchase new equipment and create more prints.

“C.J. has been a tremendous supporter of the Ohio Beef Expo. Over the years she has utilized her talent to benefit the Expo by designing one-of-a-kind artwork commemorating Expo milestones like the 30th anniversary. She always finds a way to help when a group asks for her assistance with various events, like youth fundraisers,” said OCA Executive Director Elizabeth Harsh.

Brown treasures the friendships and memories she has developed with vendors, committee members and OCA staff. “I have been to multiple state beef expos, and the Ohio Beef Expo is by far the best in the United States. That’s why it is such an honor to receive this award because it is such an outstanding event – nothing comes close,” Brown praised.

Brown grew up on an Angus and Simmental cattle farm in northern Illinois. She now resides in Lindewood, Illinois and owns C.J. Brown studios, where she creates unique prints for numerous cattle associations and companies. She received an art degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa and has a background in the gift art industry, where she worked for multiple years prior to painting cattle and other agriculturally related scenes.

2019 Ohio Beef Expo Youth Judging Contest Winners

The Ohio Beef Expo’s judging contest was held on Youth Day, sponsored by the Gallia County Cattlemen’s Association and the Fayette County Cattle Feeders, at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio on March 15. More than 560 youth participated in the contest, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) and The Ohio State University Extension. 2019 marked record participation in the judging contest.

Participants evaluated live cattle classes and were required to answer questions regarding those classes. Participants were divided into junior and senior divisions. Complete results from the contest can be found at www.ohiobeefexpo.com.

This contest would not have been possible without the valued donations of contest sponsors; A lunch for the participants was prepared by the Wood County Beef Producers, who also donated the burgers.

Snook Named 2018 Friend of the Ohio Beef Expo

The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) awarded Nancy Snook, Caldwell, Ohio, with the Friend of the Expo Award at the Ohio Beef Expo, held March 16-18 at the Ohio Expo Center. Each year, dedicated volunteers spend countless hours ensuring the success of the Expo. In an effort to show OCA’s sincere appreciation for those who have dedicated themselves over the years, the Ohio Beef Expo Planning Committee presents the Friend of the Expo award to worthy recipients who have contributed to the success of the past 31 years of the Expo.

Snook grew up on a family farm that raised registered Angus cattle. After showing in 4-H and FFA for many years, she went on to start a career as a 4-H extension educator. Now, Snook is a 4-H extension educator in Noble County and teaches as one of Ohio’s most dedicated and interactive volunteers, specializing in her youth beef quality assurance (BQA) sessions.

Snook’s family participated in the breed show and sale at the first Ohio Beef Expo in 1988. In the early 90s, Nancy was asked to join the junior show committee and help facilitate the judging contest. Today, Snook teaches youth BQA at the Expo and has been a mainstay since 2012.

“It’s awesome to see kids get excited to learn about the beef industry. Nancy has executed fun, interactive, and highly educational BQA sessions to Ohio’s youth for several years. Her tireless planning and enthusiasm to go above and beyond are what make her such an asset to not only the Expo, but Ohio’s beef industry,” said Stephanie Sindel, OCA Director of Member Services and Youth Programs.

All aspects of the Expo are appreciated by Snook. “I like that the trade show and youth activities have grown. With that happening the breed sales and shows are still the heart of the Expo. It is a whole weekend focused on the beef industry,” said Snook.

The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) awarded Linde Sutherly, New Carlisle, Ohio with the Friend of the Expo Award at the Ohio Beef Expo, held March 16-18 at the Ohio Expo Center. Each year, dedicated volunteers spend countless hours ensuring the success of the Expo. In an effort to show OCA’s sincere appreciation for those who have dedicated themselves over the years, the Ohio Beef Expo Planning Committee presents the Friend of the Expo award to worthy recipients who have contributed to the success of the past 31 years of the Expo.

Sutherly grew up on a farm in Northeast Ohio. Her family raised club calves, and she continues to raise cattle today with her husband, Dave, and son, Austin. After studying animal sciences at The Ohio State University, she started Linde’s Livestock Photography in 2001. Sutherly has been taking pictures of the seedstock shows and sales and the junior show at the Expo since 2014. In addition to the Expo, she photographs OCA’s BEST shows, several exhibitions across the Midwest, the North American International Livestock Exposition and other major livestock events.

“Linde is a huge supporter of OCA’s youth programs. In addition to the Expo, she assists OCA year-round with other youth programs and events. She approaches each with great creativity and is willing to volunteer at every turn to make them successful,” said Elizabeth Harsh, OCA Executive Director.

Showmanship, the junior show and youth events are Sutherly’s favorite parts of the Expo. She loves watching the kids and being a part of the tradition at the Expo. “The Expo is a big deal for a lot of folks, I love seeing the excitement that families have for this event,” said Sutherly.

Ohio Beef Expo Posts New Records For Event

Beef industry enthusiasts gathered in Columbus, Ohio, March 16-18, for the 2018 Ohio Beef Expo. The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) hosted more than 30,000 participants and attendees at the Ohio Expo Center. The Expo provides an annual opportunity for those in the cattle industry in Ohio, and across the nation, to learn and enhance their operations through a three-day trade show, cattle sales, youth events and educational seminars.

The Expo kicked off with a trade show featuring more than 130 vendors from 17 states. Cashman’s Equipment was selected as the premier large booth exhibitor, Weaver Leather Livestock was selected as the premier small booth exhibitor and Lance’s Trailer Sales was selected as the premier outdoor exhibitor. An educational seminar, Accessing Current and Future Cattle Markets, jointly sponsored by AllFlex USA, Inc. and United Producers, Inc. took place on Saturday, March 17.

Five breed shows and two breed parades were featured Friday, as well as numerous breed displays representing the Angus, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Maine-Anjou, Miniature Hereford, Murray Grey, Red Angus, Simmental and Shorthorn breeds. The Genetic Pathway, located in the Showbloom breed’s barn, had the industry’s most popular sires and donor prospects on display throughout the weekend.

Six breed sales brought in large crowds on Saturday, March 17, selling 374 lots with an average price of $2,879 and a gross of $1,197,125.

Two recipients were honored with the Friend of the Expo Award for their contribution to the Expo’s annual success. Linde Sutherly, New Carlisle, and Nancy Snook, Caldwell, were both honored. Sutherly is the owner of Linde’s Livestock Photos and a huge supporter of OCA youth programs. She has been the official Expo photographer since 2014. Snook has been actively involved in the Expo since her family participated in the first Ohio Beef Expo in 1988. Since then, Snook has served on the junior show committee, facilitated the judging contest and most recently taught youth beef quality assurance.

Friday was Youth Day, sponsored by Ohio Farm Bureau Federation. The day began with the judging contest where over 450 youth participated. Nearly 500 youth participated in beef quality assurance training. Junior exhibitors could also take advantage of two fitting and clipping demonstrations and a welcome pizza party. Events continued Saturday with over 500 exhibitors in the showmanship competition, sponsored by Cattle Visions, LLC and ShowBloom. The junior portion wrapped up Sunday with the market animal show and heifer show with a combined total of nearly 900 head from across the state. During the junior show, Natalie Wagner, Brown County, was awarded the $1,000 Saltwell Expo scholarship, funded by the Saltwell Western Store and Ohio Beef Expo.

During the event, OCA volunteers signed up and renewed nearly 200 memberships including NCBA members. Any current or new OCA member had the opportunity to win some great prizes. The OCA County Affiliate of Darke County won the County Affiliate Recruitment Contest drawing and received their choice of a grill or set of Tru-Test Scales sponsored by the Ohio Corn Marketing Program.

A social was hosted for OCA members, volunteers, trade show participants and cattle exhibitors on Thursday, March 15, at the Crowne Plaza North. Sponsoring the event was Boehringer Ingelheim.

Ohio Beef Expo Hosts Successful Sales

The Ohio Beef Expo held March 16-18 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio hosted six breed sales, selling 374 live lots at an average price of $2,879 with a gross of $1,197,125. More than 30,000 cattle industry enthusiasts attended the 31st annual Expo, an event of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA). Individual breed sales results were as follows:
