1:15 p.m. Increasing Ohio’s Beef Checkoff
By OCA officers and staff
The beef checkoff works to increase beef demand, but the buying power of the checkoff has eroded over the last 25 years. Today’s $1.00 checkoff purchases 47 cents of what it did in 1985 when the national program began. The checkoff simply doesn’t have the strength needed to support a robust beef promotional effort that can reach Ohio’s population of 11.5 million consumers. The OCA board has initiated an effort to increase the state checkoff by an additional $1.00. The process involves a petition and producer referendum. This seminar will focus on how checkoff dollars are used to build beef demand and how additional funds could be utilized within Ohio.
